Steely display; Exhibit brings outdoor sculpture to downtown Albany's streets.(Preview)

Nearly four years ago, Matthew Hart asked his managers at the metal shop where he worked if he could take home black square scraps of metal. "What are you going to do with these?" he remembers them asking. They saw only pieces of scrap; Hart saw the beginning of a sculpture.

Soon, the 24-year-old linked the squares to create the legs and base for "The Throwdown," a life-size steel sculpture of a musician. The musician now holds a microphone, and has a long band of golden barbed wire wrapped around its upper body that Hart found in the junkyard down the street from his home in Schodack Landing.

From things people called junk, Hart crafted his entry in this year's "Sculpture in the Streets." The 10-month, downtown Albany exhibit features works by 14 regional artists made from steel, plywood, iron and other materials.

The Downtown Albany Business Improvement District organized the event for the second year in a row with sponsor Kivort Steel.
