NSW: Mentally ill man who killed his family says he's sorry

A schizophrenic man has made a heartfelt apology for brutally killing his mother, fatherand brother before being found not guilty of murder because of his mental illness.

28-year-old DAVID MICHAEL SHEW was charged last year with the murders of his parentsDESMOND ROBERT SHEW and SANDRA LOUISE SHEW, aged 55 and 53, and his 30-year-old brotherMARK FRANK SHEW.

The trio were found stabbed to death in the family home in Port Macquarie, on the mid-northcoast of New South Wales, on November 5.

SHEW today pleaded not guilty in the NSW Supreme Court to three counts of murder butthrough his counsel admitted to killing his family.

Both the crown and defence cases were supported by more than 25 statements and psychiatricreports saying SHEW has suffered from schizophrenia for years.

SHEW will be remanded in Long Bay Prison Hospital to be under the constant assessmentof the NSW Mental Health Review Tribunal.
