QLD: Sugar workers protest against dismissals
With more sackings threatened in the Queensland sugar industry, workers are demanding
the soon-to-be-announced federal assistance package be linked to job security.
Deputy Prime Minister JOHN ANDERSON says a significant package is set to be delivered
to growers who have been waiting more than three months for a government response.
Queensland's biggest industry co-operative, Mackay Sugar, last week announced 104 jobs
would go after losses of $30 million this season.
Workers from the four mills in the Mackay district today protested outside the office
of the federal National Party DE-ANNE KELLY.
Australian Manufacturing Workers Union state secretary DAVID HARRISON says the loss
of 104 jobs in Mackay is devastating with mills in other districts saying they intend
to stand workers down.
He says jobs are not secure in the sugar industry.
