Fed: Howard untroubled by Costello's social agenda
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says there's nothing new in comments by his deputy PETER
COSTELLO about the republic, immigration levels and children in detention.
Mr COSTELLO, who vowed to speak more widely outside his portfolio last year after Mr
HOWARD'S decision to stay on in the top job, has said that immigration policy should aim
to keep children out of detention centres.
He also believes there should be higher levels of immigration and that Australia should
work towards becoming a republic.
Mr HOWARD has told Channel Nine his deputy's view on the republic is well known and
the pair has always differed on that point without it being a problem.
The prime minister says he agrees that children shouldn't be kept in detention, but
he doesn't support their release if it undermines a policy that's stopped illegal immigration
dead in its tracks.
